*Damascene: Originating in Syria and exported to Spain during the Moorish conquest in the early 700s AD, damascene is an art form that has literally been around for centuries. It was first started in Damascus, hence the name. Damascene jewelry is often handcrafted and depicts scenes with doves, flowers, and geometric shapes. Damascene is the art of inlaying different metals into one another—typically, gold or silver into a darkly oxidized steel background—to produce intricate patterns similar to niello. The English term comes from a perceived resemblance to the rich tapestry patterns of damask silk.
